A heat exchanger is a device built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another. The media may be separated by a solid wall, so that they never mix, or they may be in direct contact. Heat exchanger is one of the most common device used in various industries. They are widely used in space heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, power plants, chemical plants, petrochemical plants, petroleum refineries, natural gas processing, sewage treatment and many more.

Wide verities and various categories of heat exchangers are designed so far. Most successful designs includes shell & tube heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers, extended surface heat exchangers and regenerators.

There two typical type of heat exchanger design problems:

Rating Problem : Determination of pressure drop and heat transfer performance of either an existing exchanger or an already sized heat exchanger.

Sizing Problem : Determination of physical size including length, height and surface area.

CFD is a technique to solve flow and heat transfer equations. There are no definite mathematical correlations for complex flow physics in heat exchangers. Most of the companies relies on data generated through numerous experiments. CFD can be used to predict the complex flow behavior before physical prototype which will help designer to take intelligent decisions.
